The Visitor Center is managed by the Army Corp of Engineers. They have a lot of information about the park and can answer many of the questions you may have. This is also the location to pick up the permit to look for fossils in the fossil hunting area at the Spillway.

The area near the Visitor Center also has some easy hiking trails and a play area for the kids.
